What is Ovalation?

Ovulation is a process in the menstrual cycle in women during which a woman releases a mature egg (only one egg per month) from her ovary. At this time, women are most likely to conceive. Usually this occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle. Which is caused by an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH). This surge stimulates the final maturation and release of the egg from the ovary.

The egg then travels into the fallopian tube where it waits to be fertilized by a sperm. Your fertile window ranges from five days before ovulation to one day after ovulation. Ovulation usually lasts 12 to 24 hours during which the egg remains viable for fertilization. You will become pregnant if sperm (sperm can live for 3 to 5 days) are present and successfully fertilize the egg. The fertilized egg then implants itself in the uterus and pregnancy begins. If fertilization does not occur the egg disintegrates. Then during menstruation the thick layer of the uterus is removed.

Understanding ovulation is very important for couples who want to conceive. Because it indicates the most fertile period of the menstrual cycle. Your best chance of getting pregnant is when live sperm are in your fallopian tubes during ovulation. You can increase your chances of conceiving by identifying your fertile window using various methods, such as tracking your menstrual cycle and using ovulation predictor kits.

Let us try to know in detail about each of the signs of ovulation and how they appear on the body:

1. Change in Cervical Mucus:

Cervical mucus is a discharge from the vagina that you sometimes find in your underwear. You may notice an increase in cervical mucus and a change in its texture for a few days before and immediately after ovulation.

Hormonal changes cause your cervical mucus around ovulation to become thick, clear, thin, slippery and stretchy like raw egg white. This change is important to aid the sperm in their journey through the reproductive tract (to reach the egg). Clear, flexible mucus creates a favorable environment for sperm, allowing them to more easily pass through the cervix into the uterus. Due to which the possibility of pregnancy increases the most.

2. Change in Cervical Position:

The cervix is a narrow passage between the uterus and the vagina that undergoes changes in its position and shape during the menstrual cycle. At the time of ovulation the cervix becomes softer, higher and more open. It may feel like the tip of your nose. This change facilitates the passage of sperm through the cervix to the uterus, resulting in increased chances of fertilization.

3. Increased in Basal Body Temperature (BBT):

Basal body temperature (BBT) refers to your body temperature (Your body temperature at rest) which is usually measured when you wake up in the morning. There is a slight increase in BBT of about 0.5 to 1°F during ovulation. This increase in temperature is due to the release of progesterone hormone after ovulation, which results in a slight increase in metabolic rate. Tracking BBT can help you pinpoint your most fertile days.

4.Ovulation Pain (Mittelschmerz):

Mittelschmerz is a German word meaning “moderate pain”. This is experienced by some women as abdominal discomfort or pain at the time of ovulation. This pain usually occurs on one side of the abdomen due to the release of the egg from the ovary. This pain can last from a few hours to a day. Not all women experience Mittelschmerz, but for those who do, it may serve as an indicator of ovulation.

5. Increased Sex Drive:

Hormonal fluctuations during ovulation in women may result in increased libido or sex drive as a result of increased estrogen levels. Many women feel more sexually aroused and responsive during this time, which increases the chances of pregnancy.

5. Breast Tenderness:

Changes in hormone levels during ovulation in women affect their breast tissue. Due to which there may be increase in tenderness and sensitivity in their breasts. This discomfort is often mild to moderate and may result in swelling and heaviness in the breasts. Breast tenderness is common during the menstrual cycle and may be more noticeable around ovulation in some women.

6. Light Spotting:

Estrogen levels may increase during ovulation, which may stimulate sexual desire and arousal in some women. It is thought that this increase in libido may be nature’s way of increasing the chances of fertility by encouraging sexual activity during the fertile window. There is an increase in sexual thoughts, fantasies and reactions in women at this time, as a result it becomes a suitable time for conception.

7. Heightened Senses:

Some women have heightened senses around ovulation, including a particularly heightened sense of smell. However, the exact reason for this incident has not been fully known yet. It is possible that this may be related to changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. which may be a mechanism for increasing reproductive success by attracting mates through increased olfactory sensitivity during a fertile window.

8. Change in Libido:

Ovulation is associated with an increase in estrogen levels which can stimulate sexual desire and arousal in some women. This increase in libido is believed to be nature’s way of promoting reproductive success by encouraging sexual activity during the fertile window. An increase in sexual thoughts, fantasies, and responsiveness is observed in women during this time, making it an opportune time to conceive.

9. Change in Vaginal pH:

In women, the pH level of the vagina fluctuates during the menstrual cycle. This pH level is affected by hormone levels and changes in vaginal flora. As a result, the pH level of the vagina becomes more alkaline around ovulation. Which creates a favorable environment for the survival and mobility of sperm. This change in a woman’s pH level helps sperm travel through the reproductive tract, increasing the chances of fertilization.

10. Increased LH Levels:

In women, luteinizing hormone (LH) plays an important role in activating ovulation. LH levels increase in the days before ovulation, which stimulates the release of a mature egg from the ovarian follicle. This increase in LH can be detected using an ovulation predictor kit that measures the concentration of LH in the urine. Women can identify their most fertile days and optimize their chances of conceiving by tracking LH levels.
